During the latest episode of The View, co-host Ana Navarro faced criticism from some viewers after openly expressing relief and emotion over the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Navarro said the moment carried deep meaning for many people in the Latinx community, especially in South Florida.
“This is a dictator who has been a part of oppressing and abusing the Venezuelan people for 25 years. When we see him in handcuffs and held to some sort of accountability — it brought me to tears. It brought me great joy,” she said.
Her remarks drew more attention when she referred to Maduro as a “sadistic son of a b—.” Navarro later clarified that “two things can be true” — she could feel relief about Maduro’s capture while still questioning how the operation was handled, including the role of President Donald Trump. Even with the clarification, some viewers voiced disappointment online.
The backlash unfolded as international attention focused on the U.S.-led operation that resulted in Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, being taken into U.S. custody. The United States launched strikes in Venezuela in the early hours of January 3, and Trump later said the pair had been “captured and flown out of the country.”
U.S. officials have accused Maduro’s government of corruption and drug trafficking, saying he could face charges including narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation. Trump also suggested the United States would help guide Venezuela through a political transition and warned interim leaders of consequences if they failed to cooperate.
Global reactions have been mixed — with some leaders condemning the operation as a violation of sovereignty and others urging diplomacy while acknowledging Maduro’s controversial rule.
