British boxer Anthony Joshua has spoken publicly for the first time since being hospitalized after a car crash that killed two of his closest friends.
Joshua, 36, was released from the hospital on Dec. 31 — two days after the Dec. 29 crash that claimed the lives of his strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele.
On Sunday, Jan. 4, the former two-time world heavyweight champion shared a photo on Instagram alongside his mother and the mothers of Ghami and Ayodele. He captioned the post simply:
“My brother’s keeper,” followed by two heart emojis.
According to local news reports, Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway in Makun around 11 a.m. local time. He was reportedly in Nigeria visiting family for the holidays. The tragedy came just 10 days after Joshua defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a widely watched Netflix bout.
Authorities say Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including dangerous and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid license. Kayode was granted bail and is expected back in court on Jan. 20.
Kayode was a longtime member of Joshua’s logistics team in Nigeria, according to reports.
Following the crash, Lagos State Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso said Joshua was “heavy-hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends.”
Funeral services for Ghami and Ayodele were held Sunday at a mosque in London.
