At Least 39 Dead After Two Trains Collide in Southern Spain

At least 39 people were killed and 12 remain in intensive care after two trains collided near Adamuz, Córdoba province, southern Spain, on Sunday night.

A high-speed Iryo train from Málaga to Madrid derailed, crossing onto the opposite track and colliding with a Renfe-operated train. About 500 people were on board both trains. Emergency services treated 122 passengers, with 48 still hospitalized.

Eyewitnesses described chaos, smoke, and passengers breaking windows to escape. Local authorities reported that rescue efforts were complicated by twisted metal and trapped passengers.

Spain’s transport minister said the cause of the crash is under investigation, noting it occurred on a straight stretch of track recently renewed. Most casualties were in the first two carriages of the Renfe train.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared three days of mourning and promised a full, transparent investigation. Rail services between Madrid and Andalucía have been suspended.

Spain’s deadliest rail crash this century occurred in 2013 in Galicia, killing 80 people.
