Australia has canceled the visa of Israeli social media influencer Sammy Yahood, hours before his scheduled flight, citing his campaign against Islam and the country’s stance against spreading hatred.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said, “Spreading hatred is not a good reason to come” to Australia. Yahood had posted derogatory statements about Islam, ridiculed the UN’s Palestinian relief agency, and even called for the deportation of Rep. Ilhan Omar.
Yahood said he was blocked from boarding his connecting flight to Melbourne and called the decision “tyranny” and “censorship.” The visa revocation follows Australia’s recent tightening of hate crime laws after the deadly Bondi Beach shooting. Previous visa cancellations under the same legislation have targeted other activists with Islamophobic rhetoric.
The decision drew criticism from the Conservative Australian Jewish Association, who had invited Yahood to speak at events in Sydney and Melbourne.
