Conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly has publicly urged the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to reassess their tactics following the fatal shooting of a Minnesota mother by federal agents
Speaking with NewsNation’s Leland Vittert on Monday, O’Reilly, 76, emphasized the importance of de-escalation in law enforcement encounters. “If you’re in a position as an ICE agent where you feel deadly force may be necessary, then you should pull back and assess where you are,” O’Reilly said. “That woman could have been arrested after the fact.”
O’Reilly added that officers should avoid confrontations that could escalate unnecessarily. “She didn’t have to be confronted with a guy cursing at her and screaming at her at that moment. Did not have to,” he said. “My advice to Kristi Noem and homeland security in general would be if it gets to a point where violence might break out, you have to de-escalate it. And that is in every single police manual in this country.”
Incident Details
The remarks come after ICE agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on Jan. 7 in Minneapolis. Good, a mother of three, was reportedly shot three times in the head after a confrontation on a residential street. Multiple eyewitness videos suggest that Good may have been attempting to drive away at the time of the shooting.
A video taken from the scene shows Good appearing calm in the seconds before the fatal shots, with her last audible words reportedly being, “That’s fine, dude. I’m not mad at you. I’m not mad at you.” Shortly after the shooting, an ICE agent can be heard using a derogatory remark toward Good.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem characterized Good as a “domestic terrorist” who attempted to ram officers with her vehicle, a claim contradicted by eyewitness accounts. The shooting sparked protests across Minneapolis and other U.S. cities, as local and state officials called for a federal review.
Political Reactions
The incident has drawn mixed responses from federal officials. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt referred to Good as a “deranged lunatic,” while Vice President JD Vance stated that Ross enjoys “absolute immunity” as an ICE agent. Former President Donald Trump described Good as a “very violent… very radical person” in comments to reporters.
O’Reilly’s comments stand out as criticism from a longtime conservative voice, marking another instance where he has publicly challenged elements of the Trump administration. In November 2025, O’Reilly called on the White House to address affordability concerns in healthcare, housing, and food prices, warning that economic issues could affect the party’s electoral prospects.
Ongoing Debates
The fatal shooting has reignited debates about federal immigration enforcement, the use of deadly force, and accountability for ICE operations. Law enforcement experts note that standard police protocols emphasize de-escalation and situational assessment before resorting to lethal force.
Civil rights advocates and local leaders continue to press for transparency and accountability in the case, highlighting the broader national conversation on policing and federal authority.
