Conservative commentator Erick Erickson says President Trump’s handling of the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and lawful gun owner killed by federal agents in Minneapolis, is causing friction within the GOP.
On CNN’s OutFront, Erickson explained that Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino was elevated by Stephen Miller because of his hardline approach, but the plan “blew up in their faces” after Pretti’s death. Erickson said Trump had to “pivot back” and re-empower Border Czar Tom Homan, as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem tried to sideline him.
Erickson predicted Noem wouldn’t be fired but would be “made to disappear,” while Miller remains influential because Trump “values his counsel.”
The commentator also noted the controversy is hitting Trump with Second Amendment supporters, a key Republican voting bloc. Erickson said, “They need them to turn out in November… They may not when this administration—including the president—badmouths the Second Amendment.” He added that conservative groups are “begging the president to shut up on this issue and move on.”
