Republican lawmakers staged a demonstration of support for President Donald Trump’s threats to take over Greenland by carving a Greenland-shaped cake decorated like the American flag. The event, held at the Kennedy Center, included Reps. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Andy Ogles (R-AZ), and Abe Hamadeh (R-AZ), alongside George Simion, leader of Romania’s far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians party.
“We cut it!” proclaimed Luna as she sliced into the first piece. Simion added, “We will be there for all the free people in the world,” and also expressed his wish to “get rid of Macron.”
The demonstration drew widespread criticism from European officials and international observers. Antoine Bondaz of the European Commission tweeted, “This is how some in the US view Greenland and its people — as a cake to be cut up and shared with smiles and laughter. Sorry, but this is deeply disrespectful and frankly pathetic.”
Historians, policy experts, and journalists also voiced their disapproval. Author Joann Freeman commented, “Imagine if another country did that to us. Remember their names.” Michigan policy professor Don Moynihan described the event as a reflection of the “clicktatorship, where everything is content,” while Ukrainian journalist Victor Kovalenko joked that Luna’s next stunt might involve a Ukraine-shaped cake.
The cake-cutting episode underscores the contentious and theatrical nature of Trump’s Greenland agenda, which has drawn sharp rebukes from allies and critics alike.
