Two Republican senators are breaking ranks after the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, questioning Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s leadership.
Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who voted to confirm Noem, said her handling of the situation was “amateurish” and called for her removal. Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski echoed the sentiment, saying she would not support Noem again and that “it probably is time for her to step down.”
The criticism comes after Noem’s early comments on the Minneapolis shooting and federal immigration enforcement in the state sparked political backlash. Both senators say her actions have reflected poorly on the administration.
President Donald Trump has defended Noem, praising her work and rejecting calls for her resignation. Still, the public criticism from GOP senators shows growing concern within the party over how the situation in Minneapolis has been handled.
Noem now faces pressure from both sides of the aisle as the debate over federal enforcement tactics continues.
