California Governor Gavin Newsom responded with a sharp social media jab after CNN interrupted regular programming to air parts of President Donald Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Trump’s address included a claim that citizens of Greenland refer to him as “daddy,” saying, “I’m helping Europe. I’m helping NATO, and until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me… They called me daddy. A very smart man said, ‘He’s our daddy, he’s running it.’”
Newsom, referencing Trump’s repeated confusion between Iceland and Greenland, tweeted on X: “Time for grandpa to go back to bed.”
During the same speech, Trump mentioned Newsom directly: “I used to get along so great with Gavin when I was president. Gavin’s a good guy, and if he needed it, I would do it in a heartbeat,” suggesting the California governor could request federal support, including deployment of special forces, to address crime in California cities.
Trump’s speech covered topics including economic growth, trade, NATO relations, and U.S. strategic interests such as Greenland, which drew criticism from European leaders defending Denmark’s sovereignty.
Social media reactions to Newsom’s comment quickly proliferated. Users wrote: “It’s time for grandpa to be REMOVED FROM OFFICE,” “He barely knows where he is on any given day,” and “Daddy? He’s rambling like a senile old uncle with dementia. This orange guy is sick.”
The Davos speech also included Trump’s critiques of European economic and energy policies, trade practices, and defense spending, highlighting the president’s ongoing international and domestic commentary.
