If you think Houston traffic is bad, the numbers back it up. The Texas A&M Transportation Institute recently released its Top 100 Congested Road Segments in Texas — and Houston claims seven of the ten worst spots.
The city’s worst corridors include:
- West Loop from I-10 Katy to the Southwest Freeway
- Eastex Freeway from SH-288 to I-10
- Woodall Rodgers Freeway from US-75 to North Beckley Avenue
- Southwest Freeway from the West Loop to SH-288
- North Loop from I-45 North to I-10 Katy
- I-10 Katy from the West Loop to I-45
- I-45 Gulf Freeway from I-10 to the South Loop
Other Houston roads like I-45 and US-59 also made the top 10, with construction projects on these corridors contributing to delays. David Schrank, a researcher with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, said spot work and upcoming projects like the NHHIP are putting extra pressure on traffic.
Despite the congestion, the Texas Department of Transportation notes that Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth still experience about 39% lower delay per mile compared with similar-sized U.S. cities.
