James Talarico Wins Texas Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate as Crockett Concedes

State Representative James Talarico has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Texas, defeating U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett in a primary that concluded on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Talarico’s victory, called early Wednesday morning, marks a significant shift in the Democratic strategy for the state. He won approximately 53.2% of the vote to Crockett’s 45.5%, surpassing the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff.

Key Factors in Talarico’s Victory

  • Fundraising Advantage: Talarico leveraged a massive war chest, outraising Crockett nearly five-to-one in the final stages of the campaign. He spent over $15 million on advertising alone.
  • “Politics of Love” Message: A Presbyterian seminarian and former teacher, Talarico focused on a “top-versus-bottom” populist message rooted in faith and unity. This contrasted with Crockett’s reputation as a “rhetorical brawler” against the current administration.
  • Big-Tent Strategy: Talarico campaigned extensively in rural and red-leaning parts of Texas, arguing his moderate and faith-based tone could peel away enough swing voters to break the Democrats’ 32-year statewide losing streak.

Crockett’s Concession and Voting Issues

Congresswoman Crockett issued a statement on Wednesday morning congratulating Talarico and calling for party unity ahead of the November general election.

“Texas is primed to turn blue and we must remain united because this is bigger than any one person. This is about the future of all 30 million Texans and getting America back on track.” — Jasmine Crockett

Despite her call for unity, the primary was marred by significant technical hurdles. In Dallas County, Crockett’s home base, a shift to precinct-based voting led to widespread confusion and long lines. A judge ordered polls to stay open two extra hours on Tuesday night, and Crockett’s campaign has suggested they may still litigate the “disenfranchisement” caused by these changes.

The Road to November

Because she chose to run for Senate rather than seek re-election to her current House seat, Jasmine Crockett will not return to Congress in 2027.

James Talarico now turns his focus to the general election, where he will face the winner of the May 26 Republican runoff between incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton.
