Justice Department Subpoenas Minnesota Officials in Immigration Enforcement Inquiry

The U.S. Department of Justice has issued grand jury subpoenas to several top Minnesota officials as part of a criminal investigation into whether state and local leaders unlawfully interfered with federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Federal prosecutors served subpoenas Tuesday to the offices of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, along with Attorney General Keith Ellison, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, and county officials in Hennepin and Ramsey counties. The subpoenas seek records, communications and policies related to federal immigration enforcement, including reactions and guidance issued by the state and cities during a recent surge of federal agents in the region.

The Justice Department is exploring whether actions or public comments by these officials hindered, impeded or conspired to obstruct Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal officers during a large‑scale immigration
