Kamala Harris Defends Keeping Epstein Files Sealed — ‘We Chose Principle Over Politics’

Kamala Harris defends the Biden administration’s refusal to push DOJ to release Jeffrey Epstein files, sparking backlash across the political spectrum

Vice President Kamala Harris says the Biden administration was right not to pressure the Department of Justice into releasing the long-anticipated Jeffrey Epstein files — even if that decision carried political consequences.

Speaking with Jimmy Kimmel, Harris emphasized that the White House believed there must be a strict and uncompromising wall between political leaders and federal prosecutors.

“We, perhaps to our damage, strongly and rightly believed that there should be an absolute separation between what we wanted as an administration and what the Department of Justice did,” Harris said. “We absolutely adhered to that, and it was right to do that.”

A Decision That Sparked Immediate Firestorm

Harris’ comments ignited backlash from both sides of the political aisle.

Some left-leaning critics argued the administration should have pushed harder, believing the documents could have politically damaged Donald Trump and exposed deeper networks tied to Epstein.

Conservatives, meanwhile, mocked the “hands-off” claim, pointing to other moments when they believe the administration was less detached from Justice Department activities.

Could Trump Block the Files?

Harris also warned that Trump himself could attempt to block the release of Epstein-related records — while simultaneously praising Republicans who have demanded transparency.

Her tone suggested the fight over disclosure isn’t ideological — it’s procedural, legal, and deeply tangled.

Why The Files Aren’t Simple

The Epstein records stretch across:

  • multiple jurisdictions
  • victim-privacy protections
  • sealed court documents
  • ongoing civil cases
  • complex evidentiary rules

That intricate legal maze has slowed release efforts under multiple administrations, regardless of political party.

In short: releasing everything at once is far more complicated than many realize.

The Larger Question

Harris’ defense raises a fundamental debate:

Should political leaders push prosecutors — even in the name of transparency — or should the DOJ remain fully independent, no matter the heat?

The Epstein files remain a symbol of unanswered questions, powerful connections, and growing public frustration — and the controversy isn’t fading anytime soon.
