The Kremlin says Russian president Vladimir Putin has been invited to join Donald Trump’s newly announced “board of peace,” a body Trump claims will oversee a ceasefire and political transition in Gaza.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow is seeking to “clarify all the nuances” of the invitation with Washington before responding. The claim has not been publicly confirmed by the White House.
The reported invitation comes as Putin continues Russia’s war in Ukraine, rejecting repeated ceasefire proposals and presiding over a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands and involved documented atrocities against civilians.
Russia also confirmed that Putin’s investment envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos this week and meet members of the U.S. delegation, though it is unclear whether the Gaza board will be discussed.
Trump unveiled the “board of peace” last week as part of his Gaza ceasefire plan. The body is meant to oversee a transition to long-term governance in Gaza and supervise a committee of Palestinian technocrats. The concept was loosely endorsed by a UN Security Council resolution in November.
Initial members announced Friday include Trump as chair, former UK prime minister Tony Blair, U.S. secretary of state Marco Rubio, Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and World Bank president Ajay Banga.
According to reports, invitations were also sent to leaders in Argentina, Turkey, Egypt, Canada, Thailand, Paraguay, and Belarus. Hungary and Vietnam have confirmed acceptance. France has said it will decline, citing concerns about the board’s scope and its commitment to the UN framework.
The charter reportedly allows leaders to serve three-year terms, with an option for permanent membership tied to a $1bn fee, raising questions about governance, funding, and oversight.
Putin’s reported inclusion has intensified criticism that Trump is sympathetic to the Russian leader, particularly as the Gaza ceasefire the board was meant to oversee remains stalled and Israeli military operations continue.
