Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged the European Union to resume direct, high-level dialogue with Russia in an effort to bring an end to Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
Speaking at a press conference in Rome on Friday, Meloni said, “I think the time has come for Europe to talk to Russia.” She added that negotiations will have limited impact if Europe engages with only one side in the conflict.
The statement follows a similar call by French President Emmanuel Macron in December, signaling growing interest among some European leaders in exploring diplomatic channels to de-escalate the war.
Meloni’s comments highlight the ongoing debate within the EU over balancing support for Ukraine with potential avenues for negotiation with Russia.
