Michelle Obama Says She Would Oppose Barack Obama Running for a Third Term, Even if Trump Does

Michelle Obama says she would strongly oppose any attempt by her husband, former President Barack Obama, to seek a third term in office — even if President Donald Trump were to pursue one himself.

Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday, Obama was asked whether her husband might consider running again if Trump somehow changed the law to allow a third presidential term. Her response was direct.

“I hope not,” she said. “I would actively work against that.”

Obama added that she would personally oppose such a move, even from home, joking that some people might welcome her stance. She emphasized that her opposition is rooted in principle, not politics.

The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two terms, though Trump has recently fueled speculation by promoting “Trump 2028” merchandise. His former adviser Steve Bannon has publicly claimed Trump could find a path to a third term, though Trump himself has acknowledged that the Constitution bars him from running again.

Michelle Obama stressed that term limits exist for a reason, arguing that leadership should evolve over time.

“I believe in the need for new vision,” she said. “This is a hard job, and it requires new energy and new ways of looking at the world. Eight years is enough.”

She questioned why the same leaders should remain in power indefinitely, noting that doing so can block opportunities for younger generations to step forward. According to Obama, fresh perspectives are essential in a rapidly changing world.

“There are so many young, smart people with ideas,” she said. “We can’t keep recycling the same leaders and expect different outcomes.”

Obama also praised younger generations, saying they are more globally connected and exposed to diverse viewpoints than previous generations.

“They travel more, they know more about the world,” she said. “I’m curious about how they see solutions to today’s problems. We don’t have all the answers, and that’s okay — that’s how progress happens.”

Her comments reinforce a long-held position that leadership renewal is essential for democracy and that constitutional limits should be respected, regardless of political circumstances.
