Nationwide Anti-ICE Shutdown Set for January 30 in Response to Minneapolis Shootings

Activists across the U.S. are calling for a nationwide shutdown on Friday, January 30, urging people to skip work, school, and shopping in protest of federal immigration enforcement tactics and the recent shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. Organizers describe the events as “tyranny, plain and simple,” aiming to pressure ICE and demand accountability.

The campaign, highlighted on social media and community forums, cites the deaths of Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, and Good, 37, as the catalyst for action. Posts urge solidarity and action, calling for a full stop to “funding ICE” and an end to its operations nationwide.

Union leaders have voiced outrage. Lee Saunders, president of AFSCME, said, “What is unfolding in Minnesota and across this nation is appalling… ICE raids are terrorizing peaceful communities, separating families, detaining children and instilling fear. This is not American.”

The Trump administration maintains that ICE officers enforce immigration laws and that the agency is essential for public safety, with DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin noting a spike in assaults on agents. The White House says investigations into Pretti’s shooting are ongoing.

Despite federal pushback, organizers plan to move forward with the shutdown, calling on Americans nationwide to stand in solidarity and send a message against ICE’s “extremist agenda.”
