Nigerian Man Says He Fled Violence at Home, Now Caught in Rising Tensions in Bahrain

A Nigerian national living in Bahrain has expressed profound despair after fleeing the chronic insecurity in his home country, only to find himself in the center of the sudden military escalation between Iran and the U.S.-led coalition in the Persian Gulf.

“I left my country, Nigeria, because they were shooting guns there. What they shoot in my country is only AK-47. Now I’m in Bahrain and they’re firing missiles. Between AK-47 and missiles, I don’t even know which one is better,” the man lamented in a social media post that has resonated with many in the diaspora.

The Contrast of Threats

His statement highlights the psychological toll of escaping one form of violence only to face another, technically advanced threat:

  • Insecurity in Nigeria: The man referenced the prevalence of AK-47 rifles used by bandit groups and militant organizations in Nigeria, which have caused widespread fear, displacement, and death, particularly in the Middle Belt and Northwest regions.
  • Conflict in Bahrain: Since the U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026, Bahrain has been a direct target of Iranian retaliation. The country hosts the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, which was hit by missile fire on Saturday, March 1, 2026, causing significant damage and civilian panic.

Safety Concerns for Nigerians in the Gulf

The Nigerian government has urged its citizens in the Gulf region to remain vigilant. With Bahrain under a Level 4 travel advisory from multiple nations, the situation for expatriates is precarious, as they now face logistical disruptions, airspace closures, and the immediate threat of falling debris from missile interceptions.
