A shooting involving a federal agent in Portland has intensified already high tensions around immigration enforcement, transparency, and the use of force by federal authorities.
Two people were injured during an encounter with Border Patrol agents on Thursday, prompting city and state leaders to demand an independent investigation — and leading the mayor to call for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Portland to pause altogether.

In its statement, DHS said agents identified themselves, at which point the driver “weaponized his vehicle” and attempted to run over the agents. An agent then fired what DHS called a “defensive shot.”
The vehicle drove away with both occupants still inside.
Portland police later found a man and a woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds roughly three miles away, near an apartment complex in Northeast Portland. Police said the victims had driven themselves from the shooting location and called for help.
