Rep. Jasmine Crockett Says Trump Tried To Be “America’s Maduro” On January 6

Rep. Jasmine Crockett drew a sharp comparison between former President Donald Trump and Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro during remarks reflecting on the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“Everyone wants to talk about how Maduro was illegitimate,” Crockett said. “As we sit here on January 6, I do want to be clear: somebody else was trying to be a Maduro of the United States. Somebody else wanted to do the exact same thing. The difference is Maduro was successful.”

Crockett’s comments referenced allegations that Maduro clung to power through disputed elections and crackdowns on political opponents — and drew a parallel to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

The Texas Democrat argued that the events surrounding January 6 represented an attempt to undermine democratic institutions in the United States, even though those efforts ultimately failed.

Supporters of Trump have rejected the comparison, saying the former president pursued legal challenges through the courts and did not hold power after President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

The remarks added to ongoing political debate over accountability, democracy, and the legacy of January 6 as the country heads into another election season.

Crockett: "Everyone wants to talk about how Maduro was illegitimate. As we sit here on January 6, I do want to be clear: somebody else was trying to be a Maduro of the United States. Somebody else wanted to do the exact same thing. The difference is Maduro was successful."
