Tlaib Targets Billionaire Power With New “Defund the Oligarchy” Bill

Rep. Rashida Tlaib is introducing a new bill to curb the political and economic power of billionaires, arguing that extreme wealth concentration is undermining US democracy. The legislation, backed by the progressive group Our Revolution, calls for ending corporate subsidies, tax breaks, and other advantages that disproportionately benefit the ultra-wealthy, while reinvesting in programs that support working Americans.

Tlaib highlighted the Trump administration as a key example, pointing to policies she says enriched donors in oil, crypto, AI, and private detention industries. According to Our Revolution’s analysis, some major donors received returns exceeding tens of thousands of percent on campaign contributions and lobbying investments, while wages for average Americans stagnated and costs for healthcare, housing, and essential services continued to rise.

The bill aims to turn public frustration with concentrated wealth into concrete political action, linking legislative reform with a candidate pledge and an accountability project to track oligarch influence in government. Tlaib acknowledged that the proposal faces pushback, including from Democrats who also rely on corporate donations, but emphasized that public demand for fairness and equity is growing.

“Our goal is to limit the outsized power of billionaires in our political system and ensure the government prioritizes the needs of ordinary Americans,” Tlaib said, framing the bill as part of a broader effort to protect democracy from concentrated wealth and corporate influence.

This initiative follows a wave of progressive victories and movements calling for higher taxes on the rich and stronger protections for workers, reflecting a rising political appetite for addressing income inequality and corporate overreach.
