Trump Agrees to State-Led Probe After Minneapolis Shooting

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced Monday that President Donald Trump has agreed to allow state authorities to lead an independent investigation into the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

The agreement came after a phone call the governor described as “very productive,” with both leaders emphasizing the need for impartial review and improved coordination between state and federal law enforcement. Walz confirmed that Trump also agreed to look into reducing the number of federal agents in Minnesota while focusing on violent criminal cases.

Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and U.S. citizen, was killed during a confrontation with Customs and Border Protection officers. The shooting sparked widespread protests and criticism of federal immigration operations in the state. Walz has repeatedly called for a Minnesota-led investigation to ensure transparency and public trust.

“The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will be able to conduct an independent investigation, as would ordinarily be the case,” Walz said. He emphasized that the state has already honored federal detainers and works with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to ensure smooth custody transfers when required.

The governor’s announcement marks a rare moment of cooperation between Minnesota’s Democratic leadership and the Trump administration, though disputes over federal immigration enforcement continue to dominate political debate in the state.

Residents and local officials are now hoping the investigation will provide clarity and a path toward de-escalating tensions following the tragic incident.
