President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of James Phillip Womack, son of Arkansas Republican Rep. Steve Womack. Womack had been serving an eight-year federal term for distributing over five grams of methamphetamine.
The commutation, announced Jan. 15, does not alter Womack’s five-year supervised release requirement. Federal prosecutors indicted him in April 2023; he was convicted in May 2024 and fined $1,900.
Rep. Steve Womack thanked Trump for the decision, saying it allowed his son to be with family during a difficult period. James Womack’s criminal history includes multiple drug and firearms offenses dating back to 2007, with previous prison sentences in state court.
The clemency has drawn mixed reactions, highlighting tensions between the administration’s tough stance on drug trafficking and advocacy for compassion toward those struggling with addiction.
