U.S. Military Confirms First Combat Fatalities in Iran Conflict

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Sunday, March 1, 2026, that three U.S. service members have been killed and five others seriously wounded during ongoing combat operations against Iran. These marks the first publicly acknowledged American fatalities of the war, which was sparked by the joint U.S.-Israeli offensive “Operation Epic Fury.”

  • The Casualties: * Three service members killed in action.
    • Five service members seriously wounded, currently receiving medical care.
    • Several other personnel sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions but are expected to return to duty.
  • Notification of Families: In accordance with Department of Defense policy, the identities of the fallen are being withheld until 24 hours after the notification of next of kin.
  • Operational Status: CENTCOM stated that “major combat operations continue” and described the situation on the ground as highly fluid.
  • Naval Confrontation: While confirming the losses, CENTCOM also dismissed claims from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that they had successfully struck the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, labeling the report a “lie” and stating the carrier continues to launch aircraft in support of the campaign.

The loss of American life comes as Iran continues a wave of retaliatory strikes across the Middle East, targeting U.S. bases and allied infrastructure in response to the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
