US Security Guarantees to Ukraine Tied to Donbas Deal?

Reports claimed the Trump administration told President Volodymyr Zelensky that security guarantees would only be offered if Ukraine agreed to give Russia control of the Donbas region.

The plan reportedly included additional weapons for Ukraine if it withdrew its forces from Donbas. But Zelensky has said he won’t give up any land without a referendum, and European officials questioned whether Washington could even make binding commitments.

The White House denied the report, calling it “totally false” and saying its role is simply to help both sides negotiate peace. Officials emphasized that recent trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi were constructive, with Ukraine, Russia, and the US meeting in the same room for the first time since February 2022.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described a “qualitative change” in the talks, noting Russia’s new delegation led by GRU head Igor Kostyukov, replacing the previous negotiator known for long historical lectures. Talks are set to continue on Sunday.
