Western Sydney Woman Charged Over Alleged $36 Million Meth Smuggling Attempt

A 32-year-old woman from western Sydney has been charged after allegedly trying to smuggle more than $36 million worth of methamphetamine into Australia.

Australian Border Force officers arrested the woman at Sydney Airport on Saturday after inspecting her luggage on arrival from South Africa. An X-ray scan reportedly revealed suspicious anomalies in two suitcases.

Officers allegedly uncovered about 39 kilograms of white powder hidden in vacuum-sealed bags across both suitcases. Testing later confirmed the substance was methamphetamine.

Authorities say the drugs had an estimated street value of $36.7 million and could have supplied around 390,000 street-level deals if released into the community.

The woman has been charged with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, offences that carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
