Blood on the Road: Gunmen Kill Four in Ambush on Convoy of Soludo’s Chief of Staff in Anambra

Soludo-headshot

In a violent disruption of recent relative stability in Southeast Nigeria, a heavily armed gang launched a deadly ambush on the convoy of Dr. Ben Nwankwo, the newly appointed Chief of Staff to Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, May 31, 2026, along the isolated Amansea–Ndiukwuenu–Ufuma Road in the Orumba North Local Government Area, claimed the lives of four people—two police officers and two civilian officials attached to the Chief of Staff’s entourage.

While Dr. Nwankwo miraculously escaped the intense, minutes-long gun battle unhurt, several other civilians in his entourage sustained varying degrees of injuries as security personnel desperately returned fire.

Lying in Wait: The Nighttime Guerrilla Strike

The convoy was returning to the state capital, Awka, between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. from an official assignment where Dr. Nwankwo had represented Governor Soludo.

According to eyewitnesses and local security sources, the assailants had laid a calculated siege in the dense bush lining the highway, which locals describe as a lonely stretch that has increasingly become a haven for criminal elements.

  • The Volley of Fire: As the convoy neared the border area between Orumba North and Awka South, the gunmen opened fire, instantly targeting the security detail escorting the governor’s aide.
  • The Aftermath: A local tricycle operator reported abandoning his vehicle to flee into the brush when the gunshots erupted. Upon returning to the scene after the gunfire subsided, he discovered the lifeless bodies of the two police officers lying in a pool of blood next to their bullet-riddled patrol van—a grim scene that was later captured in a viral online video.
  • The Civilian Toll: In addition to the slain police orderlies, two civilian aides within the Chief of Staff’s direct staff succumbed to their injuries during the ambush.

Government and Police Response: “Operation Fish Them Out”

The brazen attack has sent shockwaves through the state government, prompting an immediate and aggressive law enforcement crackdown.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation, Law Mefor, released a stinging statement on Monday night, terming the incident an overt declaration of war against the state’s democratic structure.

“This was more than an attack on one person. It was an attack on the peace, security, and democratic order of our state, as well as the Government and people of Anambra. Sadly, four people lost their lives and deserve justice.”

— Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor

Emergency Security Mandate
Commanding Officer: CP Ikioye Orutugu (Anambra Commissioner of Police)
Operational Order: "Operation Fish Them Out"
Ultimatum Given: 48 hours for tactical units to apprehend the masterminds.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, immediately convened an emergency security meeting at the Command Headquarters in Awka, issuing a strict 48-hour ultimatum to all tactical and operational units to hunt down the killers.

Aggressive Manhunt Enters the Forests

By Monday afternoon, CP Orutugu personally led a combined, heavily armed task force—comprising the Nigerian Army, the Anambra State Police Command, and the localized Agunechemba Security Squad—deep into the Ndiukwuenu community to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the crime scene.

During the initial sweep of the surrounding forests, joint forces arrested one suspect found dressed in police camouflage.

Intelligence gathered by the Agunechemba Security Squad indicates that the perpetrators do not reside in the rural border communities. Instead, they operate out of Awka, utilizing a white jeep to conduct rapid, guerrilla-style strikes on neighboring communities before retreating back into the urban capital to evade local vigilantes.

CP Orutugu strongly cautioned the public to remain highly vigilant, noting that criminal elements in the state are increasingly disguising themselves in stolen police and military uniforms to operate illegal checkpoints under the cover of darkness.

This is really sad.

Viewers Discretion!!!
