A pair of violent attacks on Thursday, March 12, 2026, has left American communities reeling. A targeted assault on one of the nation’s largest synagogues in Michigan and a deadly shooting at a Virginia university are both being investigated by federal authorities as acts of terrorism.
Michigan: Synagogue Ramming and Shootout
In West Bloomfield Township, a suburb of Detroit, a 41-year-old man identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali launched a violent attack on Temple Israel, a major Reform synagogue that also houses a pre-school.
- The Incident: Around 12:19 p.m., Ghazali rammed his vehicle through the synagogue’s doors and into a hallway. He reportedly opened fire with a rifle before his vehicle ignited, causing a massive fire within the building.
- The Response: Synagogue security officers immediately engaged the suspect in a shootout. Ghazali was found dead at the scene; it remains unclear if he died from gunfire or the ensuing fire.
- Casualties: One security guard was struck by the vehicle and knocked unconscious but is expected to survive. At least 30 law enforcement officers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation as they entered the burning building to clear it.
- The Suspect: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed Ghazali was a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Lebanon who entered the country in 2011. FBI Director Kash Patel stated the bureau is treating the event as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.”
Virginia: Shooting at Old Dominion University
Hours earlier, tragedy struck the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia, where a gunman opened fire inside a business school classroom.
- The Attack: The shooter, identified as 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, entered a classroom at Constant Hall and asked if it was an ROTC class. Upon receiving a “yes,” he opened fire, shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
- Brave Intervention: The gunman was killed not by police, but by the ROTC students in the room who stepped in to subdue him. FBI officials praised the students for showing “extreme bravery,” noting they “terminated the threat” before more lives were lost.
- The Victims: The attack killed Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, a retired Army officer and beloved ROTC instructor. Two other students were wounded, one remains in critical condition.
- Terrorism Ties: Jalloh was a former Virginia National Guardsman who had previously served time in federal prison for attempting to provide material support to ISIS. He was on supervised release at the time of the shooting.
A Climate of Fear
The simultaneous nature of these attacks has prompted a massive security surge across the country.
- State of High Alert: FBI and DHS officials have increased the security posture in major metropolitan areas. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard delivered a stern message to would-be perpetrators: “If you think you can target the Jewish community… we’re coming for you.”
- University Closures: ODU has suspended all operations through Friday, March 13, and established counseling centers for students and faculty.
- Religious Tensions: While investigators have not explicitly linked the Virginia shooting to the ongoing war in the Middle East, the timing has intensified a sense of vulnerability for both Jewish and Muslim communities in the U.S.
