GOP Targets Talarico with “Radical” Label as Texas Senate Race Tightens

Immediately following his decisive victory in the March 3 Democratic primary, State Representative James Talarico has become the focus of a high-intensity “radicalization” campaign by the GOP. Fearing a competitive general election for a seat long considered safe, Republican organizations have begun an aggressive effort to paint the 36-year-old former teacher as a “liberal wolf in Christian sheep’s clothing.”

The strategy centers on resurfacing Talarico’s extensive digital history to undermine the moderate, faith-based image that propelled him to the nomination.

The “Radical” Playbook: AI Ads and Social Media Archives

National Republican groups, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), have launched a multi-front digital assault:

  • AI-Generated Attack Ads: On March 11, the NRSC released a digital ad featuring an artificial-intelligence-generated Talarico reading his own past social media posts. The ad highlights a 2021 post where Talarico stated that “radicalized white men are the greatest domestic terrorist threat in our country.”
  • The “God is Nonbinary” Clip: Republicans have widely circulated a video of Talarico arguing on the House floor that “God is beyond gender.” GOP leaders, including Governor Greg Abbott, have used the clip to argue that Talarico is “twisting Christian beliefs” to fit a “woke” agenda.
  • The “Welcome Mat” Border: A snippet of Talarico saying the southern border should have a “giant welcome mat” has been used to label him an “open-borders extremist.” Talarico’s campaign has countered that the quote is being taken out of context, as the full sentence includes his support for “a lock on the door” and modernizing ports of entry.

Why the GOP is Worried: The New Polling Data

The intensity of the attacks is driven by recent polling that suggests Talarico is within striking distance of both his potential Republican rivals.

Pollster (March 9, 2026)Talarico vs. John CornynTalarico vs. Ken Paxton
Public Policy Polling (PPP)Talarico 44% / Cornyn 43%Talarico 47% / Paxton 45%

Note: Most results are within the margin of error, indicating a statistical dead heat.

The data indicates that Talarico’s “politics of love” and “top-versus-bottom” economic message are resonating with disaffected moderates and Latino voters in the Rio Grande Valley, where Democratic turnout doubled during the primary.

Talarico’s Defense: “Distraction from the Cost of Living”

Talarico has largely dismissed the GOP attacks as a “well-worn playbook” designed to distract from real-world issues.

  • Standing by Principles: In a recent interview with The New York Times, Talarico admitted he might “communicate some views differently today” but stood by the principles of equality and dignity.
  • The “Antichrist” Label: At a recent GOP event, after Governor Abbott labeled Talarico “radical,” an audience member shouted that Talarico was “the Antichrist.” Talarico’s campaign has used such instances to frame the GOP as being fueled by “hate and division” rather than policy.
  • Economic Populism: Talarico continues to pivot back to a class-based message, focusing on the rising cost of living and energy rates, which he blames on “billionaire donors” and the proliferation of energy-hungry AI data centers.

The Republican Runoff Hurdle

While the GOP focuses on Talarico, they remain internally divided. Senator John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton are currently headed for a bitter May 26 runoff. Many GOP strategists fear that if the “scandal-plagued” Paxton wins the nomination, Talarico’s path to a historic upset becomes significantly wider.
