Tillis Unleashes on GOP Strategy: “Lazy, Unstrategic, and Stupid”

In a fiery final act of his Senate career, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has emerged as one of the most vocal internal critics of the Republican party’s current direction. On Monday, March 16, 2026, Tillis delivered a blistering critique of his party’s handling of both the Texas Senate runoff and the SAVE America Act, labeling the tactics as “lazy” and “unstrategic.”

Tillis, who announced he will not seek re-election in November following public clashes with the President, appears liberated by his lame-duck status. “I’m sick of stupid,” he told reporters, signaling a shift toward “speaking truth” regardless of the political fallout.

The Texas Turmoil: A “Self-Inflicted Disaster”

Tillis’s sharpest words were directed at the outcome of the Texas GOP primary on March 3, which saw incumbent Senator John Cornyn forced into a May runoff against Attorney General Ken Paxton.

  • The “Lazy” Label: Tillis argued that the party’s refusal to consolidate behind its incumbents—and instead fueling “civil war” between “Traditional Republicans” and “Trump Movement” voters—is a strategic failure. He described the focus on primarying seasoned legislators like Cornyn as a “lazy” way to govern that risks losing safe seats in the general election.
  • The Paxton-Cornyn Rift: Tillis warned that the chaos at Texas polling sites on election night, where a Dallas judge had to extend voting hours due to confusion, was exacerbated by the internal GOP fighting. He suggested that the party is “eating its own” at a time when focus should be on national security and the economy.

The SAVE America Act: “Swinging for the Fences”

Tillis also broke ranks on the SAVE America Act, the sweeping voting legislation currently being debated on the Senate floor. While Tillis originally co-sponsored the bill, he has become a vocal critic of the “hardline” tactics being used to pass it.

  • Filibuster Friction: Tillis slammed efforts to use the “nuclear option” or a “talking filibuster” to bypass the 60-vote threshold. “People on my side of the aisle… are trying to swing for the fences, and they’re not going to succeed,” Tillis stated. “In the process, we are setting up vulnerable members to defend the indefensible.”
  • Practicality vs. Ideology: He expressed concern that the bill’s requirement for voters to produce a passport or birth certificate every time they vote is unadministrable and would disenfranchise millions, including many in the GOP’s own base.
  • The “Legacy” Warning: Tillis stated that the President is receiving “bad advice” from aides who prioritize conspiracy-driven policy over legislative reality.
